             abstract = "The nightly and seasonal variations in gravity wave activity in 
                         the mesopause region are studied by analyzing 71 nights of 
                         atmospheric sodium (80 - 105 Km) densities observations obtained 
                         by a laser radar during a 8-year period at Sao Jose dos Campos (23 
                         S, 46 W). The data are used to calculate the atmospheric density 
                         perturbations and its spectra in temporal frequency [Fa( ) x ] and 
                         in vertical wavenumber [Fa( ) x m]. The atmospheric density 
                         variances, spectra magnitudes, and m spectra magnitudes all 
                         exhibit considerable nightly variability and a weak annual and 
                         semiannual variations. The rms atmospheric density perturbations 
                         has an annual mean value of 6.85. The and m spectra exhibit power 
                         law shapes with slopes varying, respectively, between -1.02 and 
                         -2.04, and between -1.39 and -3.93. The annual mean slopes are 
                         -1.34 [Fa( ) and -2.42 [Fa(m)].",
